How is energy transferred by wave motion?

How is energy transferred by wave motion? A vibrating source in a meduim is essential to the creation as well as transmission of mechanical waves. The meduim can be solid, liquid or gas. All types of mechanical waves- whether in spring, in water or in the air - are characterized by the transfer of energy from particle to particle of the medium. Energy from finger was transferred to the toy boat through the vibrating particles of water; hence the motion of the toy boat followed the movement of your finger.

Besides water and spring waves, other types of waves are sound, light and electromagnetic waves. Water, spring and sound waves are called mechanical waves, while light and the rest are referred to as electromagnetic waves. Unlike mechanical waves, electromagnetic waves need no meduim for their transmission.

Sound and light waves carry energy to yours ears and eyes. These waves allow you to hear and see. Sound waves carry the energy of the vibrating strings of the guitar to your ears. Light waves transfer energy of visible light to your eyes. They also carry energy from the sun to the earth. Other electromagnetic waves like radio waves and microwaves transmit signals from the radio and TV stations to your radio and TV sets.

Generally, all waves have several common features. Firstly, a wave does not transfer matter from one place to another. Secondly, a wave transfers energy. And thirdly, it transmits messages to facilitate communications.

Thus, a wave is a traveling disturbance that can transfer energy and information but no matter.
